2. Hrundel Lightbearer, The Torch Bearer Lore
In the Winter realm of the Vinlings, Hrundel Lightbearer was born to Queen Frythia Fair Frost. Messengers brought word of the birth to King Hungarling, who had been away from his hearth for seven years, adventuring with his army beyond the Northern Frontier. Returning to his kingdom, he drowned his wife in her bath and put the men of her coterie to the sword. The infant, however, was a creature of such purity and beauty that he could not bring himself to kill it, and resolved instead to raise the boy as his own.

[Changes]
[1] Introduction
Greetings, greetings. You're probably here because you have some interest in Queen of Thorns, though you're probably wondering what you'll find. Well, you're in the right place as Queen of Thorns is currently my favorite demigod and thus induced me to write form of resource for the community. You'll find plenty of info here and not just mine as I'll gladly accept feed back and input from the community so we can make this a wonderful resource. They'll even recieve credit!
I want to shy away from the term "guide", as that indicates telling you how Queeny should be played. Instead, I'll use the term "Handbook", a collection of information to help you master this stubborn mistress. Feel free to disagree, correct, or advise, I'm open minded and not so full of myself to think I am the only voice of Queeny.
As usual, this is a work in progress. I will update it over time as needed and fix any errors as needed. Feel free to pm builds, corrections, thoughts, or info. Also feel free to repost my guide as you please, you don't even need to give me credit (though it would be the nice thing to do!).
[2] Queen of Thorn Lore
.:The Tale of Thorns:.
Lord Erebus Guide (Demigod)
Strengths:
Drains health
Can move quickly into and out of battle
Weaknesses: Few ranged attacks
Very dependent on health
Play Style:
Lord Erebus is a dangerous force on his own, but his army makes him even more deadly. He can bite enemies to instantly drain their health and can quickly warp himselfto nearby locations. When surrounded, he can turn into a poisonous mist that harms his foes and heals his army. Soldiers who fall near him are transformed into Night Walkers, eager to obey his commands.
Background:
Erebus was insatiable from the beginning. When offered his mother's jugular, in what passed for nursing among the Night Walkers, the infant bled her dry.Terrified ofthe boy's appetite, his caretakers kept him in a separate cave where they fed him whole cattle. It was only when Erebus had traveled beyond the caves ofthe Night Walkers and had seen the technology of humans that he built himself a special suit, designed to keep his hunger in check. The suit, its interior lined with syringes, fed him a continuous supply of fresh blood.
His mind cleared, Erebus first established himself as the uncontested Lord ofthe Night Walkers. This was not difficult, as Erebus possessed strange powers unknown to his kin: he could move in daylight, he could travel without touching the ground, and he could kill at a distance. His position secured, Lord Erebus then concentrated on refining himself. Embarrassed by the feral, instinct-driven creature he had been, he applied himselfto the study of finer things, including poetry, literature, and blood tasting. This last was his favorite — his blood cellar contained thousands of casks of every vintage.
Lord Erebus soon became bored, however. Lacking a mental equal among the Night Walkers, he began to spend his nights abroad, often eavesdropping on the human aristocracy of Nordolath. They held costume balls, played music, and reveled in drunken debauchery, all of which the Night Walker found agreeable.
Sedna Guide (Demigod)
Strengths:
Powerful healing spells
Silences enemies
Weaknesses:
Low health
Little direct damage
Play Style:
Sedna supports her team while cutting her enemies' support. Her healing magic rescues Demigods from the brink of death, and her Yetis guard her fiercely. She enhances the healing ability of allied priests in her vicinity, and allied Demigods are able to reuse their abilities more quickly. Sedna can also silence her enemies, preventing them from using their abilities.
Background:
From the moment she was born, all who saw Sedna knew that she possessed a strange abundance of vitality. Her mother predicted that she would one day become the tribe's angakkuq, or spiritual caretaker. The tribe's current angakkuq, named Koomuk, overheard this proclamation and looked with suspicion upon the girl, for he did not intend to step down from his high position among the Elders.
From the beginning, Sedna was an independent spirit, often wandering into the frozen wastes beyond the protection of her tribe's snow shelters. She also inspired a deep love in everyone she knew — even in the hearts ofthe frostbitten searchers who were repeatedly sent out to find her.
The girl's true strangeness only became apparent when she resurrected a snow hare that had been skinned and tossed into a boiling pot. Asked by her mother how she had revived the animal, SednarepHedthatshehadsimplygivenitsome of her extra breath. After all, she could not abide the destruction ofthe "snow people," and would do everything in her power to revive any animal killed by human hands.
Sedna's mother immediately dragged her to Koomuk, begging him to take her into his care and to help her become the next angakkuq. Sedna interrupted Koomuk's reply, pointing out that Koomuk was a fraud, and that she had nothing to learn from him.
Koomuk's heart filled with undying hatred for the girl.
Queen of Thorns Guide (Demigod)
Strengths:
Heavy siege damage
Powerful area damage
Weaknesses:
Abilities limited by mode
Very mana dependent
Play Style:
The Queen of Thorns journeys across the battlefield atop atwisted beetle-chariot. When her rose-pedestal is open, she is a force to be reckoned with, skewering armies with forests of spikes and uprooting structures from beneath. When her rose is closed, she summons an army of tree-like Shamblers to fight and die in her name. Dying enemies fuel her, increasing her power.
Background:
The faeries ofthe forest were invisible to men, but were as plain as the sun to small creatures and growing things. The faeries did not rule the forest, but they influenced it in countless ways to help maintain a perfect, delicate balance. By asking nicely, they earned the obedience of all things that grew or moved.
Then a red-haired faerie was born, and she was different from the others. She seemed heavier, more substantial than her sisters. As she grew older, she found that when she walked in the field, her feet crushed the grass while other fairies lilted along without moving a single blade. After several attempts at helping things to grow ended in disaster, she was finally assigned to insect duty—the durable carapaces of centipedes and ladybugs withstood her harsh treatment, and for her part she seemed to have a special affection for things that skittered and stung.
One day, she happened across a man in the forest. She was surprised to discover that the man could see her. She also learned that she exerted great influence over the man, and that her nakedness somehow contributed to his agitation. Finally losing control of himself, he seized her. She had little time to resist, since the color
quickly went out of his face and he dropped to the ground, dead. She felt his life force flowing inside her like some drug, and was exhilarated. She now saw that she had special gifts.
General Oak Guide (Demigod)
Strengths:
Protects and enhances allies
Slows and weakens enemies
Weaknesses:
No burst damage
Limited ranged attack abilities
Play Style:
The Oak is the guardian of his army and the bane of his foes. As infantry die near the Oak, his banner calls them back to rise and fight again as Spirits. He can protect his allies from harm with his shield, and he heals his compatriots when he lands killing blows. The Oak has the power to not only slow his enemies, but to increase the damage they take, making them a soft target for his army.
Background:
Thanosthe Immortal, loyal captain to generations of Nimoth Kings, could not be felled in battle. He had received many death-blows, only to rise again and rally his men to victory. It was said that he had been so badly mutilated by centuries of fighting that he could no longer bear to be looked upon, and that this was why he was never seen without his helmet and armor. At court, he was a stoic, monolithic presence, only speaking when addressed.
It was therefore a shock when he refused the orders of King Nimoth XII on the eve ofthe Battle of Rond.Thanos knew that the men of Rond were away from their village, and that the battle would turn into a slaughter of innocent women and children. The king, unaccustomed to disloyalty from his favorite captain, became enraged, threatening to banish Thanos and his vassals for athousand years.Thanos looked for a moment upon the king. Finally, he spoke.
"As you wish. I will go."
The Rook Guide
Mard Hammerhand
Strengths:
Very durable
Many independent weapons
Weaknesses:
Large target
Slow movement speed
Play Style:
The Rook is a slow-moving Demigod who crushes enemies with his hammer. He is a dangerous melee fighter and does not fall easily. He can upgrade himselfto gain additional weapons that target enemies independently, and he can raise Towers of Light to defend an area. When he is low on health, the Rook can drain material from structures to heal himself.
Background:
Mard Hammerhand came to the aid of the wretched Belronders at their darkest hour.Their hill-kingdom had been all but annihilated by the armies ofthe Vlemish and the Plenor.thetwo giant kingdoms between which it was sandwiched. Mard, a hearty and cheerful warrior who carried a hammer the size of a birthday breadloaf, offered his services to the Fathers of Belrond. He was a skilled quarry-man and builder, and showed the Belronders how to mine the granite underneath Greymount Hill.
Under Mard's direction, they used these giant stones to erect a great keep. Almost as soon as it was completed, the stronghold witnessed two separate battles, first against the Vlemish and then against the Plenor. To their surprise, the Belronders trounced both armies, not least because Mard was an inspired captain and a ferocious warrior. The Belronders rejoiced, and saw Mard as a member of their family.
Regulus Guide
Strengths:
Very long range attack
Powerful against Demigods
Weaknesses:
Weak in melee combat
Low health
Play Style:
Armed with a powerful crossbow, Regulus is deadliest at long range. His normal attack can be greatly enhanced, enabling him to attack from longer distances and to debilitate his enemies. He can rapidly lay down a minefield to protect either himself or an area. When faced with many enemies, he can fly into a rage, trading mana for crossbow bolts that explode on impact.
Background:
Regulus contrasted with the other winged Thelara not only in his physical perfection but in the depth of his curiosity and intellect. While other Thelara spent their whole lives frolicking amongst the clouds, Regulus searched for knowledge. His greatest curiosity was reserved for the Grofflings, a violent but clever race of ground-dwellers whose inventions enthralled him.
One day, Regulus flew too low and was snared by a nasty Groffling named Skel. Pulled to the ground and caged, Regulus endured ridicule and then torture. While Skel'sjeering henchmen looked on, the Groffling severed Regulus' wings and hung them in his trophy-grotto.
Regulus would have died in his cage if not for the charity of Kerrott, an old Groffling tinkerer who could not bear to see another living thing so ill-used. Kerrott broke the Thelaran free and brought him home, nursing him back to health even when, in lucid moments, Regulus begged for death.
Soon, Regulus regained his strength. In an effort to distract the Thelaran from his disfigurement, Kerrott taught him how to use his metahvorking tools to make trinkets. To the Groffling's surprise, Regulus proved a savant with hammer and anvil. Regulus worked night and day, first building an exquisite set of armor, then constructing a gigantic crossbow.
Unclean Beast Guide
Strengths:
Fast melee attacker
Drains health
Weaknesses:
Relies on health
Limited ranged capability
Play Style:
The Unclean Beast is a swift-moving creature that can quickly charge and retreat. It deploys a dizzying array of harmful effects that can cripple anyone foolish enough to come too close. If the Unclean Beast finds itself low on health, it can drain nearby enemies. Be cautious of your allies when fighting against the Unclean Beast, for your friends maybe infected with its vile and contagious plague.
Background:
Picking through the wreckage of his caravan after a sandstorm, Saam-el came across a strange, half-buried book. It contained writing, but not in any language he'd ever seen. Suspecting it might have some value, he carried it to the next oasis, where one of his wives lived.
Arriving home, Saam-el was spurned by his wife because he had lost his dowry-chest in the storm. As he prepared to sleep, the book whispered to him.Though it spoke in athousand foreign tongues, he could somehow comprehend the offer that it made:the book would give him the power to dominate all the tribes of the dunelands, in exchange for his wife. He assented, and his wife soon became pregnant.
The birth went very badly. Entering the dark, bloody birth-tent, Saam-el found a horrific, foul-smelling creature, all teeth and spikes and exposed organs. He ran from the place in terror, and the beast followed him out, fleeing into the duneland wastes.
Saam-el hurried home and tried to destroy the book, but fire would not harm it. When he tried to bury the tome, the whispering voices only grew louder inside his head. Finally, he drank himselfto sleep.
The Torch Bearer Guide
Strengths:
Strong damage with fire magic
Stun and weaken enemies with frost magic
Weaknesses:
Fragile
Available spells limited by mode
Play Style:
The Torch Bearer changes between two modes, both devastating to enemies. In frost mode, he conjures powerful ice storms and slows his foes to a frozen crawl. When the Torch Bearer ignites himself, he exchanges his frost spells for fire. In this form, he conjures a wide array of army-smashing spells, from searing fireballs to explosive novas.
Background:
At the time that the Queen of the Vinlings gave birth to Hrundel Lightbearer, the king had been away from the kingdom for seven years.Told of his wife's infidelity, he returned to his hall and killed the queen and her male attendants. Moved by the innocence of his wife's new son, he spared the child and resolved to raise him as his own.
As the child grew, he began to demonstrate strange abilities: he could make both fire and ice do his bidding.Though the child only used his abilities to delight the girl he loved, the king saw that in time the boy might grow into a powerful usurper. The king's misgivings were amplified by his priests' warnings — the boy's magic portended ill tidings for the Halls of the Vinlings.
On his eighteenth birthday, Hrundel and his friends were summoned by the king to a special party, to be held inside a new wooden hall that had been erected for the occasion. The king never entered; instead, he looked on as his guards locked the partygoers inside the structure and set it aflame. Hrundel held his beloved in his arms as the two were burned alive.
The tender part of Hrundel died that night, but a dark vengeance took its place. Rising from the hall's ashes bearing a still-guttering torch, Hrundel's charred corpse rained fire and death upon the king and all his subjects.
Only after he had razed the homes and farms of all Vinlings did the Torch Bearer move on to colder places, far away.
